How to Enjoy You're First Therapeutic Massage Experience

Step 1

1st, determine whether you want a Massage therapist to come to your home, go to a day spa or a chiropractors office.
After being turned to Jell-O, some people prefer not to drive, while others need to get away from familiar surroundings (messy house, bills, the neighbors barking dog...) You choose what's right for you.

Step 2

If you decide to go out, call a few places to ask what kind of therapeutic massage techniques they offer and determine what you think you'd enjoy before hand. Techniques include, Hot Stones Massage, deep tissue massage, Rolfing, Swedish massage etc...
*At a Day Spa/Hair Salon the room should be away from the stylists. Overhearing someone complaining about their spouse or inhaling perm odors probably won't be conducive to relaxation.

Step 3

If you have a preference to be seen by a man or a woman massage therapist, be sure to let them know. If you think you'd be uncomfortable removing your clothes, you may want to go to a place that has massage chairs or have a Shiatsu Massage in which you are fully clothed.

Step 4

If you have any problems such as back pain or want more emphasis on a certain area, Make that known. The Massage Therapist might want to work out a knot on your back, but you may prefer 15 minutes on your scalp. or your feet. If too much time passes and it seems like they've forgotten , remind them "don't forget my hands, scalp... please".

Step 5

If you're at all uncomfortable during the session , this is no time to be a Wimp! If you need a pillow under your legs, a blanket, ... and the massage therapist doesn't offer you one ASK for it.
If the massage is too deep SAY SO, more than once, if you must. You're paying good money and should be cozy, comfortable and not be sore for a week. If the Therapist really cares about her/his clients they will appreciate you telling them because we want to give you a Marvelous Massage.

Tips & Warnings

* Some people believe because Massage can be costly, they needn't give a tip, but it’s customary to tip 10 to 20%. Also, keep in mind your therapist often gets less than half of what's charged.
* Most people who give massage prefer NOT to be called a Masseuse because of the bad connotation. We prefer Massage therapist, Body worker (Or you can ask)
* With the 100's of therapeutic benefits, its easy to justify getting a massage, but If you can't afford it at a Spa, you can look for any massage therapy schools near you that offer massage at reduced rates.
* Warning some people should not drive "under the influence" of Massage as their ability to function may be impaired.

Saving Money- Barter To your hearts content

With todays economy most of us have things we do with out. If your self employed why not try bartering. As a Massage Therapist I LOVE Bartering and have bartered for needs and wants. I have bartered with a Veterinarian, an Optometrist, for carpet cleaning, housecleaning,vitamins, installation of a ceiling fan,  and more.

Some people pay a large fee for bartering organizations who do the work for you and set up the barters but if you are willing to do the leg work yourself its FREE.

When I want something I just pull out the yellow pages and start calling. For some of my barters I've found interest in the first call but when I bartered with a Veterinarian it took me about 20 calls to find someone who was willing to treat my cat in exchange for Massage. But it was well worth the effort.

Don't be discouraged if you don't get interest right away or people act like your crazy because there are plenty of people out there that will be interested.


And by the way, I would love to find other things to barter for here in the Palm Springs area.
I've been a Massage Therapist for  over 15 years and come to your home/office. I LOVE giving relief to clients suffering from conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Migraines and just plain work/life related stress and pain. Its wonderful to be the highlight of someones week.

Whether I'm giving the lightest touch to someones Grandma or the deepest Massage to the Hardcore Athlete I fashion each massage to the needs and comforts of the client.

How to justify your Massage Therapy to your spouse in a bad economy

Step 1.

You know the old saying, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Reason with your spouse that you can't afford to be sick, especially if you are self employed and don't have sick days. If getting your massage therapy prevents you from throwing out you're back or losing work due to a migraine headache or other health condition isn't it saving you $$ in the long run?


Step 2

Make an Announcement: "Hey sweetie, you know how you complain about me taking up so much of the closet and want me to get rid of stuff around the house? Well, I’m going to have a garage sale and spend what I make on massage therapy, OK?
(If you make quite a bit, buy gift certificates so it won’t get spent on something else.)


Step 3

Find Someone To Barter- As a Massage Therapist for many years I have bartered for house cleaning, prescription glasses, hair services, nails, vitamins.. If you're in a career that would be conducive to bartering such as those aforementioned, or a tutor, carpenter... You can find someone willing to barter if you take the time to make some calls.

Step 4

Tell your spouse that the ONLY thing you want for any special occasion such as Wedding anniversary's etc... Is a gift certificate for massage therapy?

Step 5

You could try saying : "You know Dear YOU should be getting massage therapy as well! It would help with you're _______(fill in the blank)
*Most people know Massage relieves stress and relaxes muscles but it also lessens depression and anxiety, alleviates low-back pain, lowers blood pressure, improves flexibility, relieves migraine pain, strengthens the immune system, improves rehabilitation after injury and helps athletes to prepare for and recover from, strenuous workouts.


Step 6
Hey Love, I know how you hate to bring me out every weekend to dinner and the movies. If I can get a massage once a month, we can stay home more often and find something to do around here instead of a movie. ("Wink- wink)
